Cold Lake's population of roughly 16,000 swells dramatically during air show weekend as thousands of visitors pour in from Edmonton, Calgary, and across the province. Hotels, motels, and B&Bs within a 40 km radius — including in Bonnyville, Grand Centre, and Elk Point — sell out weeks or even months ahead. Secure your lodging as soon as you buy your ticket, and consider camping at local RV parks or booking a vacation rental on the lake if traditional hotels are full.

CFB Cold Lake is an active operational fighter base, which means stringent security protocols apply on show days. All visitors and their vehicles are subject to search at the entry gate. Leave prohibited items — including alcohol, illegal substances, weapons of any kind, coolers larger than 16 quarts, and pets (except registered service animals) — at home or in your vehicle. Pack light in a clear bag to speed up the screening process and avoid holding up the line behind you.

Base access is controlled through a limited number of entry points, and the lineup of vehicles stretching down Highway 28 can grow to several kilometres by mid-morning. Gates open at 9:00 AM, but the busiest arrival window is between 9:30 and 11:00 AM. Plan to arrive at the base perimeter no later than 8:30 AM to secure a parking spot close to the show line and clear security before the first aerial performance kicks off. The flight line at 4 Wing runs generally east-west, and the prevailing mid-July wind comes from the northwest. The display axis means that the majority of high-performance manoeuvres happen directly in front of the main spectator area. Position yourself on the north side of the runway early in the day so the sun is at your back during the peak performance window (11 AM – 2 PM). For photography, a lens in the 70–200 mm range is ideal; longer glass (400 mm+) is needed for head-on passes.

Concession stands on the base serve burgers, hot dogs, fries, and cold drinks, but lines can stretch 20–30 minutes during the lunch rush (12:00–1:30 PM). Bring a refillable water bottle — hydration stations are available — and pack your own snacks to tide you over. Many local community groups operate food booths inside the showgrounds, offering a better variety and shorter wait times than the central vendor row. Cash is still king for these smaller booths, so bring small bills.

Northern Alberta's summer wildfire season has historically impacted Cold Lake Air Show operations. In 2024 and 2023, smoky conditions reduced flying hours or forced cancellations. Make the drive worthwhile by arriving Friday or staying Sunday night — paddleboard rentals, boat tours, and lakeside dining at the Marina provide a relaxing contrast to the high-octane air show. The nearby Cold Lake Provincial Park and Iron Horse Trail network are excellent options for hiking and cycling if the jet noise gets to be too much.
